Sleep can make or break any situation, but certain things keep us from sleep, whether homework or playing on your phone. Several students were asked about their sleeping habits to get some insight on sleep and what prevents an average student from getting the sleep they need.

Staff Writers In Red Lion Area School District, there are 65 students enrolled who are homeless, and at least 6 teenage mothers. Programs such as The Children’s Home of York and the Haven Home for Girls support these students. “They support me physically, they give me a roof. The home is too sweet not to be safe,” Red Lion Area Senior High School junior Brianna* said. Brianna, 17, greatly appreciates all that the Haven Home has done for her. In order to create a better life for Brianna, the staff helped her get a job, provides computer access, and emotionally supports her. The Children’s Home of York is an organization that helps children and families in Pennsylvania who are in need. For more than 150 years, the home has provided many programs and services that help find children a home. By Shayla Scallorn
Social Media Editor Debt during and after college is a hard reality crushing millions of students a year. Very few people can pay for school without some form of aid especially since financial aid does not usually cover all costs associated with college. Money from scholarships helps to fill that gap. Searching for and applying to scholarships is a tedious and time-consuming process. However, more and more scholarship search engines come out every year, such as Scholly and Raise Me. Both tools simplify and streamline the effort. By Helen Zeidman Editor-in-Chief The sticker shock of college tuition can strike fear in the hearts of both parents and students. But with ample opportunities for financial aid and scholarships, that blow can turn into a blessing. Recent changes to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) have made the process of applying for grants and loans quicker and more accurate. “There are some great changes for the 2017-18 FAFSA,” Jessica Petrie, the financial aid coordinator at Penn State York, said. “Because students are able to file the application much earlier than in the past, families will have more time to explore the student aid options that are available, including scholarships.” The new prior-prior system, which lets applicants use tax information from two years ago, will ensure accuracy and faster results. The application is available to fill out as of Oct. 1, as opposed to waiting until Jan. 1 as in previous years. So, students will receive their financial aid offerings months earlier than with the old FAFSA. By Shayla Scallorn
Staff Writer Fear, excitement, stress and confusion: familiar emotions overtaking the minds of freshmen this year and every year when starting their high school career. Most freshmen will experience more than one of those feelings, but the important thing to remember is every person in the school is or has been in the same spot. Maybe in junior high you could get away with that massive, overflowing binder that seemed to magically eat yesterday’s homework and worksheets. That one people were afraid to even walk past for fear it will choose that moment to explode in a disarray of ripped and unfinished papers. First and foremost, freshmen, it is time to get organized. In high school the workload and overall expectations are much higher, so it is important now more than ever to keep the chaos in check. |
